Dental Deep Cleaning to Treat Gum Disease

Once the dentist notices you have gum disease, you may need more than basic teeth cleaning. One of the best ways to get gum disease under control remains root planing and scaling. During this deep cleaning treatment, the dentist smooths the roots of your teeth and cleans under the gum line. You may need local anesthetic or sedation if you have sensitivities to dental procedures, as a deep cleaning can cause discomfort. After the removal of plaque and smoothing of the roots, your gums can reattach to the tooth, beginning your recovery from gum disease.

How Dentists Clean Teeth to Improve Gum Disease

Your dentist may notice the signs of gum disease during your routine exam. When caught early, patients can recover from gum disease. If the disease progresses, however, permanent damage to the gums and teeth can occur. The professionals at Edge Dental can schedule a special appointment for your dental deep cleaning. If your dentist recommends a deep cleaning, get one as soon as possible to preserve your oral health.

During a deep cleaning, the dentist may numb your gums with lidocaine. Some patients may also require nitrous oxide or oral sedation. The dentist then begins to work under the gum line to remove built-up plaque and tartar. This buildup contributes to bacteria that damage your gums. The dentist also smooths out the root of the tooth during your deep cleaning dental procedure. The smoothing process allows the gums to reattach to the tooth easier.

Will my dentist put me to sleep for deep root cleaning?

Dentists do not use general anesthesia on patients for deep cleaning the teeth. Sensitive patients, however, may need oral sedation. Dentists can also use local anesthetics and nitrous oxide to limit the discomfort of the procedure.

Can tooth scaling strengthen a loose tooth?

Yes, tooth scaling can strengthen a loose tooth. During a tooth scaling procedure, the dentist smooths the root of the tooth and cleans underneath the gum line. The procedure helps the gums reattach to the tooth.

Determining if You Need a Dental Deep Cleaning

Your dentist may recommend a dental deep cleaning procedure to halt the progression of gum disease. If you have permanent damage to your gums, you may need other treatments, as well. If you need a dental deep cleaning near me, you may notice some of the following signs.

• Bleeding gums
• Receding gums
• Swollen gums
• Pain or discomfort
• Discoloration of your gums
• Bad breath

A dentist in Houston can help you get gum disease under control. Early treatment can help you avoid receding gums and tooth loss.

    Are dental deep cleanings necessary?

Only some dental patients need a scaling and root planning procedure. Most individuals only need a regular cleaning during their routine dental visits. Dentists recommend deep cleaning when they detect gum disease in patients.

How often should I get a dental scaling?

You may only need one deep cleaning to remedy the problem of gum disease. Once the dentist removes the plaque and smooths the roots, you can start fresh by protecting your oral health. Quality dental care and improved dental hygiene at home can help you prevent further problems.

Common Procedures Used by a Gum Disease Treatment Dentist

Your dentist may combine several treatments to eliminate your gum disease. If your gum disease causes receding gums, you may need a gum graft to restore the health and aesthetics of your smile. Dentists often use several of the following treatments to reverse gum disease.

• Deep cleaning
• Flap surgery
• Guided tissue regeneration
• Soft tissue grafts
• Bone grafts
• Oral antibiotics
• Mouth rinses

Your dentist must confirm the level of gum disease before proceeding with treatment. Doctors only use grafts when permanent damage takes place. If you catch gum disease in the early stages, you can often reverse the process with no permanent complications.

Affordable Dental Cleaning

Deep dental cleaning without insurance can cost up to $350. The cost can rise if you need sedation or nitrous oxide. Talk to your dentist about self-pay discounts or payment plans if you do not have dental insurance. If you have dental insurance, call your provider and ask about coverage for a dental deep cleaning to understand the cost.
