Scaling and Root Planing
Taking care of your mouth every day is essential for keeping it clean and healthy, and for preventing serious oral health issues from developing. In addition to daily care, it is important that you have your teeth professionally cleaned and examined every six months. Ignoring your oral hygiene routine, even only occasionally, can lead to the development of gum disease. Edge Dental can help to restore your oral health with scaling and root planing.
What is Gum Disease?
Gum disease occurs as a result of a bacterial infection. It occurs when an overabundance of bacteria in your mouth irritates your gums. This irritation causes your gums to become inflamed. Redness and inflammation, in addition to the bleeding of your gums when you brush and floss, are the earliest symptoms of gum disease. These symptoms are often ignored or missed altogether.
Your gums eventually begin to pull away from your teeth, leading to the formation of periodontal pockets. Bacteria collect these pockets, where they continue attacking your gums and begin attacking your periodontal ligaments and your jawbone. Your gums begin to recede, and your supporting structures weaken. Eventually, your teeth become loose, and you may even be faced with tooth loss.
Treating Gum Disease with Scaling and Root Planing
Scaling and root planing is a common treatment for dealing with gum disease. This treatment is often referred to as a deep cleaning for your teeth, during which we clean all visible surfaces of your teeth as well as those surfaces below your gum line. Scaling is the cleaning of the visible surfaces of your teeth. We use a tool known as a scaler to remove plaque, tartar, bacteria, and other debris from your teeth, with special attention given to the gum line and just below it. After scaling, we move on to root planing. This is the cleaning of the root surfaces of your teeth.
With small, specialized tools, we effectively remove plaque, bacteria, and toxins from the surfaces of your tooth roots. This process smooths the roots of your teeth, which aids in preventing new bacteria from building up on your tooth roots. Once complete, an antimicrobial wash is used to kill off any lingering bacteria. By thoroughly cleaning your teeth, we can alleviate gum irritation, which gives the tissue an opportunity to heal and properly reattach to your teeth. After your treatment, you are scheduled for a follow up to ensure that the treatment is working and you are healing properly.
