Root Canal Houston, TX

There are some ways to save teeth from a variety of different issues. When a tooth experiences some minor decay we will usually treat it with a filling. If it becomes cracked or chipped we can fix it using dental bonding or even veneers. If a tooth suffers from deep decay, or has been damaged to the point that the root is affected, often we can use root canal therapy to prevent the tooth from having to be extracted. At Edge Dental we always have your oral health in mind and promise to do our best to save your teeth whenever they can be saved.

The Layers of a Tooth

To understand what a root canal is it helps to understand the basic composition of a tooth. A tooth is made up of three layers. The outermost layer is the enamel, which is very hard, white, and works very hard to try to keep your teeth from harm. The enamel is a very thin layer.

[Tooth Root Canal DiagramBeyond the enamel is a much thicker layer known as the dentin. Dentin is hard and durable and makes up the structure of the tooth. When decay reaches the dentin, it’s time to have a filling placed.

The final layer is the pulp and the root. This inner layer is not a structurally significant portion of the tooth, containing fleshy pulp and the root of the tooth. If decay makes it to this inner portion of the tooth a root canal will be required.

What a Root Canal Is

We have all heard of a root canal, but many people still do not know what one is. A trip to the dentist can cause some anxiety, but much of that anxiety can be alleviated by understanding the procedure you will be undergoing. When a tooth suffers severe decay or trauma to the root or pulp (inner core) it may still be saved with a root canal. Think of a root canal in much the same way you would a filling. The goal is to remove the decay and the damaged portions and fill it in so that the tooth remains in your mouth.

We start a root canal by ensuring your comfort with local anesthetic to numb the site, and any sedation that you request. Once we are sure that you are comfortable, we can begin the root canal by drilling into your tooth to access the pulp in the core of the tooth. We then remove the pulp along with all traces of damage and decay, leaving your tooth hollow. We then disinfect the interior of the tooth and fill the cavity with an inert substance. We will then fill the tooth the same way we would any normal filling, with tooth-colored composite resin.
