Does Getting a Dental Crown Placed Hurt?
Here at Edge Dental in Houston, TX we understand that there are lots of people out there who get nervous at the thought of having dental work done – anxiety over visiting the dentist is an extremely common thing! For this reason, we like to take the time to educate all of our patients on what exactly we will be doing during any particular procedure that they may need. Dental crowns are a very common dental prosthetic that we place quite frequently. Dental crowns are used to protect teeth that can no longer continue functioning normally due to structural damage suffered from physical trauma or decay. We are sometimes asked if the procedure will hurt, our answer is always, “No.”
What is a dental crown?
A dental crown is a cap that is made to look just like your natural tooth and fits over the top of your tooth to allow you to keep the tooth and the functionality of the tooth. Dental crowns are used to cover teeth that have had root canal therapy, or if a filling has failed and the tooth needs more support than a replacement filling can provide.
The Dental Crown Placement Procedure
To have a dental crown placed, we must first take an impression of the tooth that we will be making a dental crown for. This impression will be sent to our dental lab where they will create a perfect replica of your tooth. Once the impression has been taken, we will administer a local anesthetic to the site around your tooth to ensure that you don’t feel a thing during the procedure. We need to shave off some of the enamel from the outside of the tooth to make enough room for the crown to sit over the top of the tooth and still look natural.
The reason we administer a local anesthetic is because of the process we use to remove the enamel from your teeth. We shave the enamel off of your teeth using a special dental drill, which creates a decent amount of vibration, and some heat in your tooth. The local anesthetic will prevent you from feeling either the heat or the vibration.
If you are ever having a procedure done at our office and notice any discomfort, please let us know right away so that we can stop the procedure and administer more anesthetic. We never want you to feel uncomfortable during a procedure, and will do everything in our power to make sure that you have a great experience.
Other Sedation Options
At Edge Dental, we offer a few different sedation options for patients who would prefer to be sedated during their dental procedures. While it is not common to sedate patients who are having such a common place procedure as dental crown placement, we are always happy to provide you with anything that will help to alleviate anxiety and give you a more positive experience.
Nitrous oxide is a good sedation option for dental crown placement procedure because it relieves anxiety and give a feeling of warmth and happiness.
