When Should You Get an Extraction Over a Root Canal?

Posted on 8/13/2018 by Dr. Justin Lai
When Should You Get an Extraction Over a Root Canal? If you have a tooth that's infected root canal therapy is a very effective way of cleaning out that infection and saving the tooth, however, there will be times when this treatment is not a good alternative and the tooth will need to be removed.

We will always try to save or repair your natural, but when should you get an extraction over a root canal?

When a Root Canal is Needed

A root canal is needed when there is an infection due to tooth decay or trauma to a tooth. In these cases, the layer of the teeth, called the pulp, is infected or damaged and needs to be repaired. The pulp is where the blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue in the tooth are located, so it is critical that any infections in this area are taken care of quickly.

Can a Root Canal Save Every Teeth?

Unfortunately, root canal therapy cannot save every tooth, even though we do everything possible to keep your natural teeth. If the infection is too severe, then an extraction is the only way to prevent it from extending to other teeth or parts of your body. When there is too much damage from a blow, a root canal may not save the tooth either.

Sometimes patients who have cancer and are undergoing radiation or chemotherapy, have weakened immune systems and an infection in the mouth could be dangerous, so a root canal may not be an option. Others with an immune system that is not strong can also have more serious dental issue that requires a tooth extraction.

In every case, if we have all the latest information about your overall health or if anything has changed since your last visit to our office, we can make the most informed decision. The first step is to come in and get an X-ray to determine the extent of the problem and choose the best course of action.
