How Much Floss Do You Really Need?

Posted on 4/20/2018 by Dr. Justin Lai
Floss Edge Dental TX 77079We've all heard our dentist tell us about the importance of flossing our teeth. Some of us have even seen reports that floss removes 40% of the bacteria (a.k.a. plaque) from our teeth.

This is important in reducing cavities, irritated gums, and the likelihood of developing gum disease. However, there's one question that we rarely hear an answer to: "How much floss do I need to use?

How Much Should You Use?

To get the most benefit out of flossing your teeth you'll want to use about 18 inches of dental floss. There are a few reasons why it's so important for you to use this much dental floss.

First, it's important to use fresh dental floss between each of your teeth. If your teeth are located tight together your floss may become a bit shredded. When this happens, you'll need to use a new part of the floss.

Secondly, if you have a lot of food particles or plaque in your mouth you'll want to make sure you have enough floss to use so you don't transfer it between your other teeth.

How to use Dental Floss Correctly

Once you have enough dental floss you'll want to wind it around your middle fingers. Make sure you leave an inch or two between your fingers. Now use your pointer fingers and thumbs to guide the floss between your teeth. When you have it there you'll want to slide or rock it back and forth.

Don't force it or you'll damage your gums. However, you do want to curve the floss around each of your teeth and go slightly below your bum line. Now use the same rocking motion to remove the floss from between your teeth. If you have any questions on how to do this properly, ask us.
