Snacking on Veggies Can Improve Your Dental Health

Posted on 11/15/2016 by Dr. Justin Lai
A collection of vegetables.
Veggies are a great food that most people do not get enough of. They are healthy, and they fill your body with much-needed vitamins. If you are looking for an extra reason to get your daily fill of veggies, then think of them as the perfect mini-toothbrush in the middle of the day.

Veggies are great for your teeth, and should be a regular part of what you eat each day.

How Veggies Help Keep Your Teeth Clean

Veggies are some of the roughest foods we eat, which our teeth enjoy. They need the pressure to keep the gums and bone healthy, plus the more we chew, the more we salivate.

That cleans off our teeth as we eat. Veggies also have a rougher texture while we are chewing, which helps remove the gunk built up on our teeth as we eat. In essence, it is like brushing your teeth on a small scale with each different veggie we consume. So which ones should we be eating the most?

Which Veggies Are Best for You to Eat

There are a lot of great veggies, but a few of them stand out more than the rest in terms of dental health. First is celery. Celery is great for your entire body. The texture brushes your teeth, and the extra water helps keep your mouth clean between brushings. Next is spinach. Your body needs to eat greens regularly, and spinach is one that is full of fiber (great for teeth) and hard to chew.

This is good because that increases saliva production and helps clean your teeth. Finally, you have watercress. It combines the benefits of both celery with the extra water, with that of spinach in how much effort it takes to chew. Plus, ounce per ounce, it has almost no calories. Win-win!
