What is the Point of Root Scaling?

Posted on 9/30/2016 by Dr. Justin Lai
A woman about to receive a scaling and root planning treatment.Root scaling is a process that is typically done in the early or middle stages of gum disease to help protect the teeth. Root scaling and planing are often done at the same time. The dentist will go in, clean up around the root of your tooth, place your gums back in place and allow them to heal right back up against your tooth once more.

There is sometimes a need for medication in the pockets between your gums and tooth to help the tooth and gums stay healthy, but once the procedure is done, your gums often feel much better and are healthier.

Why is Root Scaling Important?

When the dentist goes into that area between your gums and your tooth's root, he is trying to remove plaque buildup that is caused by many different things. It could be that you were not able to tend to your teeth as attentively as you wanted in the past, it could be that your toothbrush pushed tartar and plaque below the gum line, or it could even be due to the progression of gum disease, leaving gaps around your teeth where food particles were getting stuck.

No matter the cause, root scaling allows the dentist to go in and clean that area up, helping to keep the tooth as a whole healthier and stronger than if it was left alone.

This procedure can be slightly uncomfortable so you will be numb through it, but the benefits of having it done are great. If you want to try and save your teeth from gum disease or simply need help to keep your teeth as healthy as possible, your dentist may recommend that you get this procedure. The sooner you get it done, the sooner your mouth will be feeling better and you will be back to smiling.
